Thompson Prize

The Prize and Its Purpose


The John D. Thompson Prize was established to honor John D. Thompson, a professor of health administration education, who set teaching, commitment to learning, collegial relationships, and health services research standards which are without peer.

The $1,200 Prize recognizes junior and mid-career faculty based on their overall contributions to the field of healthcare management education, broadly defined. This includes scholarly and practice-oriented research, teaching accomplishments, and other relevant experiences and achievements in areas such as curriculum and program building; student mentoring; and leadership in the healthcare management education field. Mid-career faculty, e.g. those who are at the Associate Professor level and/or have been in an academic position for an appropriate length of time, allowing for the building of a strong, multi-faceted record, are the desired focus for this award. Junior faculty (e.g. at the Assistant Professor level) may be considered in extraordinary instances. The Prize is awarded to a faculty member from an AUPHA Full Member Program.

Nomination Process
Anyone from an AUPHA full member program may nominate a candidate for the Prize. Nominations must include the nominee’s current curriculum vitae, a single letter from the nominator of not more than five pages outlining the nominee’s contributions to the field of healthcare management education broadly defined, a short statement (less than 3 pages) from the nominee on their overall accomplishments in the field of healthcare management education (e.g. research, teaching, and leadership), and two sample publications. Individuals may be re-nominated from year to year if they continue to meet the criteria for the Prize.

Criteria & Selection Process
Nominations are judged by a panel of recognized leaders in the field of healthcare management education, appointed by the Board of AUPHA. The awardee shall be a faculty member at a Full Member Program of AUPHA. Preference is given to faculty at the Associate Professor level who have built an overall record of accomplishment in the areas noted above. Junior faculty at the Assistant Professor level will be considered in extraordinary circumstances if their overall record is appropriate. 

Emphasis is placed on:

  • Nominee’s overall impact on the field of healthcare management education, broadly defined.
  • Nominee’s record of research excellence in the fields of healthcare management education, health services research, or health policy.
  • Nominee’s record of teaching excellence in the fields of healthcare management education, health services research, or health policy.
  • Nominee’s record of leadership in areas such as curriculum and program building; student mentoring; and professional service—focused on the field of healthcare management education.

Selection of the Prize winner place each spring. The Prize is awarded at the AUPHA Annual Meeting.
