Starting in 2026, programs interested in pursuing initial undergraduate certification will be required to first enter candidacy status to ensure they are ready for this rigorous peer-review process. Programs begin with declaring their intent to stand in January. After this declaration, they complete an intensive self-review, reporting where they think they stand on each criterion within the self-study. As long as programs complete this step and pay 10% of the initial review fee, they are approved for candidacy status.
Once approved, candidacy status remains valid for up to three years. Programs may choose to stand for certification as early as one year after they declare their intent to stand for candidacy. If they do not stand for their initial certification within three years, they must renew their candidate status.
Programs that go through candidacy status will be assigned to a peer mentor who has significant experience with certification. These mentors will provide constructive feedback on candidacy materials and guide applicants through the eligibility process. Given that the review process involves several decision makers from the review team to AUPHA’s Board of Directors, peer mentors cannot weigh in on whether a program will receive certification, or whether they will receive a “fully met” on any single criterion, with any certainty.
Candidacy Status ultimately offers programs confidence and support to ensure they are well-positioned for the rigorous certification process.
