The University of Minnesota Duluth HCM program and University of Minnesota Family Social Science have planned a study abroad program in Thailand for J term 2014. They seek a diverse student group with different views of health, healthcare, family structure and family organization.

Students will have the opportunity to earn three credits during this Families and Healthcare Businesses in Thailand program.

  • Explore the interdependence of culture, religion, family, business and health care provision.
  • Study the vivid contrasts between the United States and Thailand to gain important insights into ways that culture and country contexts shape ideas of health, medical care and family life.
  • Gain a unique insight into Thailand's important influence on the global health care market, including its active and growing medical tourism industry.
  • Examine family and health care in Thai contexts such as a rural fishing village, a northern Hmong village, a village-based HIV-AIDS prevention program, a Bangkok slum area, and refugee resettlement efforts.
  • Discover traditional Eastern approaches to health and well-being which are deeply rooted in Thai culture, religion and tradition.
  • Experience Thailand as a country of scenic diversity and ancient traditions, of tranquil temples and modern urban excitement. With an independent history going back more than seven centuries, it has managed to absorb a variety of cultural influences and blend them into something uniquely and memorably Thai.

Course components include:

  • Relationship of the globalization of health care to local health care, community and family systems
  • Basic principles and concepts related to the globalization of health care
  • Aspects of medical tourism, refugee care, poverty and child development
  • Interdependence of culture, soci-economic status, and family relationships related to health.
