To all, The recent announcement by the Trump Administration that they are considering the merger of the Department of Education and the Department of Labor warrants a remark. I let this sit because I do not intend it to be viewed in any way as a political commentary. Indirectly, however, this change influences all of our members. Commentators describe the proposed merger as being consistent with Trump’s campaign pledge to reduce the size and increase the efficiency of government. Nobody can argue against those goals. Perhaps a merger will improve government in these two crucial areas. As usual, the devil is in the details. As long as the key functions of ...

Over the years I'd become increasingly fascinated with the idea of helping our health administration students develop their writing skills. If your institution is like mine, students to get a significant amount of practice with the "usual" writing assignments – strategic plans, executive summaries and the like. One type of writing that students may not have as much positive experience with his personal writing, designed to Earlier this week I discovered a new publication from the National Academy Medicine entitled " Nursing, Trauma, and Reflective Writing ". The piece cites statistics were likely all familiar with – 85% of intensive care unit nurses report ...

My Last Blog! First let me start off by thanking the AUPHA members for giving me the honor to serve as Board Chair of AUPHA. It is truly one of the highlights of my professional career.  This year went fast and that is due in large part to working with a great team.  The AUPHA Board and Staff are incredibly talented and a key part of my job as board chair was not to get in their way. I decided that in the spirit of the annual meeting theme I would look back to look forward. I was fortunate to talk with 12 past AUPHA Board Chairs and ask them three questions: What do you foresee as primary concerns/issues for the healthcare management industry in the ...

The Value of Studying History Reviewing the next to final draft of “Looking Back to Look Forward: AUPHA at 70” during the last several weeks deepened my understanding of AUPHA’s history. Despite being a member since 1983, I either did not know or more likely did not remember details of much of our history. This edit also made me aware of how dependent AUPHA is on smart, committed and hardworking faculty. Especially in the early years of AUPHA, we were led by individuals with a deep understanding of healthcare management and the importance of education. They seemingly had a strongly held vision of what our programs and our association should become at a ...
