ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS BEGINNING FEBRUARY 2012

Program Overview

HCA is proud to sponsor the HCA Corris Boyd Scholars Program. This program was established in honor of a healthcare leader who dedicated his life to diversity and excellence in leadership – especially among people of color and women.

The 2012-2014 HCA Corris Boyd Scholars Program offers two $40,000 scholarships to deserving students of color entering a graduate program in healthcare management. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements and submit all materials by the deadline to be considered for the scholarship. Awards will be announced in June 2012.

Corris Boyd (1961 – 2005) 

Mr. Corris Boyd was a senior healthcare executive with HealthTrust Purchasing Group and HCA.  He was dedicated to increasing diversity and a proponent of excellence in leadership.  He also championed the success of minority and women-owned businesses through strategic partnerships.

Mr. Boyd was active in his community, respected by his peers, inspired all who knew him, and a mentor who was the “ultimate leader.” 

The Scholars Program was established in 2006 in his honor.

Eligibility Requirements

At the time of award, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Have applied and been accepted into an AUPHA full-member masters degree program for start in Fall of 2012 (not before August 1)
  • Be a student of color
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0) in undergraduate coursework
  • Have US citizenship or permanent resident status

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Leadership Qualities
  • Academic Achievements
  • Community Involvement
  • Commitment to Healthcare and Healthcare Management as a Career Path
  • Financial Need (may be considered when all other factors are equal)

Award

Each recipient will receive a $40,000 scholarship towards tuition and other expenses at the AUPHA full-member graduate school program of his or her choice. The award will be paid in four installments, paid in August 2012, December 2012, August 2013 and December 2013. Students in accelerated programs will not receive the 2nd year installments until the dates noted above. No exceptions.

Application and Award Process

The application and award process follows these four steps:


STEP 1: APPLY
To complete the application, you will need:

  • A list of the AUPHA member, CAHME accredited programs you have applied to and the status of your application
     
  • Your current cumulative GPA or that from your most recently completed academic degree
     
  • GRE or GMAT score and your Score Report either in Adobe PDF format (to upload) or sent by mail or fax (unless not required by the school to which you have applied) 
     
  • Your current résumé (in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format) uploaded on the electronic application
     
  • Your Personal Statement explaining why you are choosing to pursue a career in Health Administration and addressing why you should be selected based on the Selection Criteria.  This is THE MOST important part of your application so make sure that it fully addresses the selection criteria and how receiving the scholarship would impact your career. In your statement be sure to address:
    - Why have you chosen the school you plan to attend?
    - How has your background led you to decide that this is the career path for you?
    - How do you see yourself using the degree?
    The statement should not exceed 1,200 words.
     
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation signed and on letterhead either in Adobe PDF format (to upload) or sent by mail or fax. One must be from a faculty member, one from an employer/supervisor, and the third from the individual of your choice that can best address your qualifications for the scholarship. Letters must be dated not earlier than February 1st and specifically address the scholarship and the Selection Criteria.
     
  • Information on any additional financial support that you anticipate receiving towards your graduate degree (other scholarships, grants, etc.)
     
  • Official Transcripts from all higher education institutions attended. These take a long time to process so if you are thinking of applying, request these and have them sent to AUPHA right away!

Questions? Call AUPHA at 703-894-0940 x115 or email lmiddleton@aupha.org.  Once your application is received, it will be reviewed by a panel of healthcare administration faculty and professionals. Applications will be judged based on the Selection Criteria.

If any part of the application is incomplete or a supporting document is missing at the deadline date, the applicant/application will be disqualified.  

The application form and all supporting documents must arrive to AUPHA on or prior to the May 4, 2012 deadline. No exceptions will be made.


STEP 2:  APPLICATIONS JUDGED

A committee of academics and practitioners will review all applications and recommend five finalists to HCA for consideration not later than May 21, 2012.


STEP 3:        FINALISTS CHOSEN

Finalists will be chosen by HCA and may be invited to an interview not later than early June, 2012.


STEP 4:          WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The two winners of the HCA Corris Boyd Scholars Program will be notified not later than mid-June, 2012.
