2015 will celebrate the 10th AUPHA Academic Forum held in conjunction with HIMSS-15 in Chicago April 12 to 16.  This is the only peer reviewed opportunity for AUPHA faculty to present current research at a professional association’s conference in the general area of health information technology.  The relationship with HIMSS has been extremely valuable beginning in 2005 with Margaret Schulte when she was VP for Education at HIMSS and has continued with present leadership under Joanne Klindinst.

An example of recent past presenters includes:

  • Karen Wager
  • Gabriela Mustata Wilson
  • Cynthia LeRouge
  • Jay Shen
  • Mark Gaynor
  • Eta Berner
  • Martha Cornwell Riddell
  • Jonathan DeShazo

The Call for Abstracts is posted in late September each year with a submission date usually the first week of November.  The external review team select between four and six abstracts to be presented at HIMSS.  This year the selected abstracts will also be published in a special section of the Journal of Health Administration Education.

This year the Academic Forum is Sunday afternoon April 12th from 1PM to 5PM.  Each year one or more local programs sponsor the event and the reception that follows.  The chair and moderator for the past 10 years has been Brian Malec, PhD from California State University, Northridge.

The review committee this year selected the following five abstracts to be presented at the 10th Academic Forum.

  • Cathleen Erwin and Amanda Dorsey, “The Importance of Electronic Medical Record Education Modules for Future Health Care Administrators”
  • Eric Ford and Geoffrey Silvera, “Assessing the Relationship Between Patient Safety Cultures and HER Strategy”
  • Jeff Helton, “Assessing the Impact of HER Application Selection on Hospital Labor Efficiency”
  • Kendall Cortelyou-Ward and Alice Noblin, “ Physical Therapist’s Perception of the Use and Efficacy of Mobile3 Apps to Improve Patient Outcomes”
  • Janusz Wojtusiak and Sorina Madison, “Engaging Students in Health Informatics Research: Strategies for Success”

AUPHA and HIMSS have a MOU that allows full-time AUPHA faculty to register at a special rate of $120.  HIMSS attracts a cross section of healthcare professionals with 39,000 expected for the Chicago conference and over 1,200 vendors in the exhibit hall.  HIMSS also hold world-wide conferences in Europe, Middle-East and the Asia-Pacific regions.

The AUPHA discount code is 15ACFAC.  Conference registration information can be found at http://www.himssconference.org/registration
